Sania Abidi is the founder of Arthashastri, an independent blogging website & news portal that helps you to learn & get news updates about Economics and Finance. She is experienced with a demonstrated history of working in the research industry. Today we got a chance to interview her, let’s know more about her.

Excerpts from our exclusive interview with her:

Q1) Tell us a little bit about your start-up and your journey, please;

Arthashastri is a startup educational, blogging, and news website. It is registered under the Government of India. It’s currently in its initial stage but it would be ready in a few months. As the name suggests Arthashastri means an Economist, which I am on a journey to become. It works towards minimizing the gap between Financial Literacy and the Indian population. The journey has been rough but when you focus on your goal it becomes easy.

Q2) How did the idea for your business/startup come about?

When I was a teenager I chose economics as a subject in my high school. After learning more and more about it compelled me. I was a topper in the subject in my class. But, due to less learning material available online it made it hard to do projects.

Before starting Arthashastri, I thought about 2 main audiences 1. Students who have taken Economics as a subject – to give them all the necessary material for them to learn and grow. 2 – People who are unaware about Financial Literacy – to give them a basic concept of how things work regarding money and how to utilize it.

According to Global Financial Literacy ranking India is on 121 ranks out of 144 countries present in the Data. I’m working towards making people more aware of it in the future.

Q3) What was your key driving force to become an entrepreneur?

I come from a background where both my parents were in Government Services. My father is retired now and my Mother is no more with us. Being a government servant has its own perks but there is less freedom to chose what you want to do. It is a cutthroat competition now to get a government job. My parents were satisfied with their job but, unlike them, some people join the job and give up their dreams and work for the things they were never interested in.

My main key driving force to become an entrepreneur is FREEDOM. Freedom to chose, freedom to spend time in places that benefit you, Freedom to work for your passion, and freedom to work for a good cause to make society a better place.

Q4) How did you come up with the name for your business/startup?

The word Arthashastri means an Economist in the Hindi Language. Growing up this was my favorite subject. My ideals are some famous Economists whom I always used to look up to like Amartya Sen, Abhijeet Banerjee, Raghuram Rajan, Manmohan Singh, and many more.

Q5) What service(s) or product(s) do you offer/manufacture?

We aim to become an educational-based firm that would provide a learning platform to the common public. There are many things planned for the future and I hope to achieve the goal of increasing Financial Literacy in the common public. Whatever it will be, it would majorly focus on the educational and news area.

Q6) What risks are you facing? 

The main risk that arises in the business is the audience and their interest. Today people love to spend their money in the wrong areas of interest and end up being bankrupt. People are more interested in showing off rather than saving and utilizing it for good use. The audience is rarely interested in the stuff we are promoting. It’s hard for us to gather an audience currently. We want to work currently for the betterment of society and increase basic financial literacy among the common people. That is our main goal.

Q7) What are your responsibilities as the business owner?

Everything that happens in the business is the owner’s responsibility whether it’s good or bad. A good business owner will not only take the business to great heights but also deal with its failures. Some of the basic responsibilities include –

Q8) How many hours a day do you work on average & can you describe/outline your typical day?

Working according to a schedule makes things easier and it’s hard to forget any task if you work according to a schedule. I usually make a schedule a night before of all the things I want to do the next day and mark on the things as soon as the task is completed. Keeping your surroundings clean and organized is an add-on that makes the task easier and faster to complete.

I work according to the work I have to do that day which I always put on my schedule. Sometimes I work for 10+ hours or sometimes just 4 hours. I always take out 3 hour time to do daily chores which includes cooking, cleaning, and organizing. At least 2 hours to pray and self-care. And at last, a good night’s sleep is a must of at least 7 hours.

Q9) What comes first for you money or emotions?

Money always comes secondary. Without emotions and it’s worth money is useless. That is why to focus on this issue we started this start-up to increase Literacy about money in the people. People in India are mostly unaware of the basic concepts of how to save money, where to invest and where not to, budgeting, financial planning, etc.

To deal with it our start-up would like to bring a change. You should not work for the money rather let the money work for you. If you add this approach to your life, you will always have money to spare.

Q10) What piece of advice would you give to college graduates who want to become entrepreneurs??

There are certain things to keep in mind if anyone wants to start something of their own –

Always be honest in your work, to others and most importantly to yourself.
