Excerpts from our exclusive interview with Paulami Niyogi:

Q1) Tell us a little bit about your start-up and your journey, please;

My business is a self-funded business. It doesn’t come under any start-up model. After leaving my corporate career in 2017 I opted to work as a Freelancer. Gradually I understood that I can manage an organization on my own. So in the year 2018, I registered my Consulting agency Paulami Niyogi Consulting. Initially, I had no idea about the rules and regulations, and compliances. I went to every department and enquired about it.

I did my own research and after I established my company, I asked other people to work with me. My interest in marketing and Sales always drives me and I started getting projects from some local businesses. My existing clients helped me a lot to get new clients. I started my journey alone and now we are a team of ten people. We are serving clients across the country.

Q2) How did the idea for your business/startup come about?

I wanted to do something of my own where I will have a sense of belongingness. And I am thankful to the organizations I worked for as an employee. I learned so many things during my corporate tenure, but somewhere I felt that I can apply my skills and knowledge and create something of my own. And; I was never worried about the size of my organization. I wanted a happy organization where my employees and clients both will be happy. Unboxing happiness was my only concern. Spreading joy, success, knowledge, and support is what I wanted to do. This is how it came into my mind. I was also inspired by the different success stories of young entrepreneurs.

Q3) What was your key driving force to become an entrepreneur?

In one word, it is creativity. I always seek creativity in every action. It is also a challenge. Once you understand your inclination you can never go back. There is no one size fits all format in Marketing. Marketing is a field that requires a lot of creativity. Understanding consumer psychology, Brand character, and behavior pattern requires a lot of patience. Creativity nurtures patience. So, I decided to take a pathway where I can work with a lot of creativity and also wanted to attract creative people.

Q4) How did you come up with the name for your business/startup?

I thought of giving it a unique name. But my clients used to call me and say “Hey Paulami….” Somehow those calls made me decide that my company will be known by my name so that everyone can find a little bit of me whenever they interact.

Q5) What service(s) or product(s) do you offer/manufacture?

We offer Digital Marketing, Content Management, Brand Activation, Creative Audio Visual  Content, Public relations, and Market Research.

Q6) Why should people choose your product/services?

We have experienced personnel and subject matter experts. We strongly believe in creating values for our clients. And; We customize strategies, implement those and also make sure that we innovate on behalf of our clients. My team is always active and as mentioned earlier we focus on unboxing the “Happy” factor.

Q7) How do you market your business, and which tactics have been most successful?

It is the word of mouth that worked best for me. I get most of my clients through my existing clients. Apart from that, we do Social media campaigns and Digital Ads. Sharing knowledge and value across all the social media platforms helped us to gain clients.

Q8) What risks are you facing?

The risk is this industry is not very organized. Sometimes it becomes difficult to make people understand the impact of Digital Media. Most people question the credibility of Digital media as some of them still consider Social media and Digital media less important.

Q9) Did pandemic (COVID 19) affect your business? if yes how?

Pandemic initially affected it but soon we started Business Coaching programs and that helped us to regain our confidence and also got new clients through that.

Q10) Have you considered any alliance/partnership/funding?

Not yet. I am open to welcome partners in my business.

Q11) What are your responsibilities as the business owner?

As an owner, I mostly focus on client acquisition and strategy building. Team coordination is also an extremely important job role that I have.  My team members are from different parts of this country and we all working remotely. So coordination takes a bit of effort and we enjoy our regular communication.

Q12) How many hours a day do you work on average & can you describe/outline your typical day?

I work for 8 to 10 hours a day. My days start early with stretching and mindfulness practice. Then I practice music. I start my work around 9 am in morning. We coordinate and our SOP includes execution of work, planning and measuring sales, managing marketing communication, and appearing on client consultation calls. I want my team to finish off their work early and spend time with their family.

Q13) What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage fear?

My greatest fear is failing deadlines. I am extremely obsessed with time. Punctuality and managing time in an effective way is a practice that I follow from my childhood. My father imbibed this value in me. I manage my fear with better planning. I am an active mindfulness practitioner and a certified Life Coach. Helping others overcome their fear helped me to learn my own tactics.

Q14) What comes first for you money or emotions?

Emotions. For me, emotion is very important. Money will follow if we can manage our emotions well.

Q15) Tell us about your early life & How has being an entrepreneur affected your family life?

I grew up in a very small town in Bengal. My childhood was not very interesting. It was all about study and music. During my Post-graduation, I witnessed the other side of life. I met new people, gained new skills, and explored the opportunities. Being an entrepreneur, my life has changed a lot. I don’t get much time now to spend with my family. But I try my best to stay connected with them. My life has become more organized though. I manage my focus and time in a better way.

Q16) What piece of advice would you give to college graduates who want to become entrepreneurs??

Do not stop. Never doubt your instinct. If you want to achieve something, go for it. Learn, apply and thrive through experiences.
