Excerpts from our exclusive interview with Aashirvad Kumar:
Q1) Tell us a little bit about your start-up and your journey, please;
OptimizeForSEO has been my long-awaited journey since I extended my hands into the corporate world. We started up in April 2019. Being on the same boat as most other entrepreneurs we were driving towards innovation in our services.
My self-driving passion finally came into existence with the help of my co-founder and the highly diverse team when I launched my startup.
As it is said “nothing comes easy”, the same was true when I came up with the idea of entrepreneurship and left my job to get going with my own company.
So, I would say initially the journey was imposed with hurdles but the passion was driven with positivity which I never betrayed with fear. As a result, today we are a well-established SEO Agency In India with clients from multi-domain. The patience and struggle paid off!
Q2) How did the idea for your business/startup come about?
My partner and I were both in similar fields and we knew we wanted to start our own company. We’d do freelance work for about months and then we decided we wanted to start freelancing full time and not be tied down to a specific place. Firstly, we planned to pull out every odds of the business along with events for which we were pretty educated on the business and what it entailed, but we never quite thought it would pick up as it has.
I think it was the day I decided to start this blog. It was around February – the beginning of February 2007, and no one was aware of the idea of Lifehacking. So, I decided to put my efforts into making this blog successful, similar to how companies try to make their services successful. I spent 15 minutes each day writing for this blog, despite having a full-time job at the time. And that’s how it all began!
We aim to enable our business to create a great digital presence and more businesses on any scale efficiently. Our ambition is that after some time has passed, developers will not even know that there was a platform that helped them build their product!
Q3) What was your key driving force to become an entrepreneur?
I believe I’m not a person who can just work for others, I dreamed big and wanted to have something of my own. So, I believed I was not meant to follow a humdrum life that in itself distinguished me from the ordinary. As a result, I went for my independent stance as an entrepreneur.
Q4) How did you come up with the name for your business/startup?
As I was already into SEO, it was obvious that I would choose the name for my agency strategically with the right stuffing of keywords. I did a lot of research to find a domain name with a business perspective i.e it must have high search volume and intent.
For me, “if you are offering something to others, you must prove it from your end first” By this, we came up with the name “Optimize for SEO” which did fit perfectly for my long-term goal as well as signified my work forum. Hopefully, it did work as planned and we are getting traffic from this keyword.
Q5) What service(s) or product(s) do you offer/manufacture?
Optimize for SEO in particular is an SEO company that offers A-Z services to businesses on every scale for its growth and digital transformation. Our major services are:
- Website Design & Development
- Search Engine Optimization
- Local SEO
- Pay Per Click (PPC) Advertising
- E-Commerce SEO
- Social Media Marketing
- Press Release
- Graphic Designing
- Content Marketing
Q6) Why should people choose your product/services?
Our services are strategy-oriented, at no point do we compromise on quality, and thus today we have proven the result of what we do. We are a professional consultant first, so we initiate any project right from the scrap adhering to the existing mission of that particular project at a cost-effective rate.
Altogether, we are a team of professional developers and creators who hold expertise in their team, with experience in different areas. Our services are designed in a way to promote business on the internet as nowadays it is vital to have an online presence even if you are an individual.
Q7) How do you market your business, and which tactics have been most successful?
No doubt we have worked day and night to make this startup successful, but our greatest achievement was when the client itself started to do marketing for us. I was quite confident in my work as we never made fake promises to clients. The transparency and connection in services with them as a professional itself turned out to be an indirect tactic.
Q8) What risks are you facing?
Sustainability in the market is a major risk for us, especially when you are a startup agency. People usually don’t easily agree to pay an equal amount despite the fact that the quality of service is high, the same as they get from MNC. They prefer choosing MNC or choosing us with a low service package. Therefore, we are trying to build more trust with the target audience in order to stand equal as an MNC. Also, at times we are the ones who are compromising before them because we won’t ever miss out on our clients.
Q9) Did pandemic (COVID 19) affect your business? If yes, how?
Being a digital agency, we offer services in different industries. We did lose some clients of the travel, import-export, and educational industries due to their economic downfall. And plus we received a much lower response from new clients.
On the other hand, our e-commerce clients didn’t pay the full amount. The sustainability of full payment was at stake on whether they will pay or not. Here too, we had to bear some loss by offering full-fledged service with low outcomes from them and had a fear if these new clients will be potential clients or not.
However, we got opportunities for new clients who were willing to take their business online due to pandemics, as they knew the importance of online marketing today.
Q10) What are your responsibilities as a business owner?
Owning a business comes with a lot of responsibility! It’s a lot more than just being accountable for the finances. As a business owner, I have to constantly keep my team motivated, interact with the clients, think about the future of business, and bring upgrades to keep the business successful. Also, I have to make sure everything is on the right track.
Q11) How many hours a day do you work on average & can you describe/outline your typical day?
As an entrepreneur, you have to work 24×7. The same applies to me and I devote around 10-12 hours to my work. The day starts with an opening meeting, with team members, analysis of work, work that needs to be modified; client discussion – receiving their feedback and suggestion on what they need next. Apparently, I make calls with new clients and monitor the entire marketing part.
Other than this, whenever I get free time in this; I read and make social interactions for new business ideas.
Q12) What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage fear?
As I previously mentioned, I can never compromise on quality so my biggest fear now is not missing on quality, potential clients, and commitment.
For this, from my end, I always pick up the highly qualified members whose vision lies in innovation; the ones who can catch up with new market trends, research, and work on all updates of the market. Apparently, I try to educate the employee to manage on the quality part.
Q13) Tell us about your early life & How has being an entrepreneur affected your family life?
Ever since my childhood, I was more of a kid who had a keen interest in learning. Born and brought up in a small town named Daltonganj in Jharkhand. I had limited access to quality education and facilities. Although I got no such exposure, guidance, or environment in my hometown; to opt for fancy courses or degrees to choose a subtle pathway. But I was lucky enough to have my friend named ‘Ritik Kumar‘; who helped me to take the initial step that was blogging in my college days. Technical learning like that of software and programming caught my major interest; so I consistently learned and practiced M.S Office, C++, etc. with joy and wrote more on the same. So, initially, I started off as a blogger.
My decision to start a startup didn’t affect my family. In fact, it is because of their eternal support that I am where I am standing today.
Q14) What piece of advice would you give to college graduates who want to become entrepreneurs??
- Keep yourself prepared to face the consequences of the decision you make. Not every decision may work in your favor.
- You are no longer confined to a single domain when you are beginning a startup. Therefore, buckle up to be a multitasker and whilst being a good problem solver.
- Never look back on your last journey. The present matters the most to make your future. Hence, stay determined, keep yourself motivated.
