Excerpts from our exclusive interview with her:
Q1) Tell us a little about your start-up and your journey
My entrepreneurial seeds were sown at the age of 12 and that’s when I consider my journey to be started. The parents of my friends insisted that I tutor their kids who were in my class as they were aware my concepts were SUPER clear! I am a woman who loves to write and be under the spotlight. Well, writing poems you could imagine. It itself resonates with my name…
My love for literature and the English language materialized when I got my Hons. degree in the same field and started writing commercially. All along I carried with me one desire- to make a difference to the world and to be well known for the same. What started off as writing during leisure time turned into a full-time job. Who knew?
After starting my journey as a writer, I took on certain projects where I wrote for famous brands like Nike, Macy’s, Target, Famous Footwear brands, etc. And eventually diversified into new areas like Social Media, Copywriting, Blogging, Public Relations, Digital Marketing, Media Relations, Public Speaking, Coaching, Mentoring, Consulting, etc.
After gaining a mix of corporate job & freelancing experience, I thought it was the right time to build something of my own. I enrolled in a few courses and became a certified life coach. But it was all not a bed of roses. I failed miserably in this venture while conducting webinars.
Nobody would buy from me. As, nobody knew me. It was then I realized my mistake.
“Koi mujhe jaanega nahi, to meri maanega kaise.”
(If a person wouldn’t know me, how would he follow what I say/recommend or sell.)
And for that I needed to have a personal brand.
PERSONAL BRANDING became my new love and passion ( It still is.)
There was no turning back then.
Of course, I had multiple failures but my goal kept me going.
I paid attention to building my personal brand online.
Linkedin was the very first of them.
I fortunately have thousands of followers on it.
And, as I chase my dream:
The dream to be popular which needs a STRONG personal brand.
I put the foundation for my personal brand online.
I launched my own podcast channel-JumpSauce-Learn Unscripted With Kavita Gupta (A personal branding & digital marketing podcast)
I am relentlessly working with my team on building a robust presence for myself on Instagram, Twitter, Quora, YouTube, etc.
I aspire to be a public speaker (as I love the stage) and an author (for my love of writing) in the coming years. Learning from whatever I have built for myself post my breakthrough, I now build online personal brands for small and medium startup owners and founders to boost lead generation, conversions & business sales.
My clientele includes both domestic & international names. I turn Executives, CEOs, founders, CXOs, CFOs, Entrepreneurs into online celebrities to grow their business sales using Online Personal Branding, LinkedIn Personal Branding, LinkedIn Growth Hacking, Captioning, Copywriting, Content Creation, Content Marketing, Social Media Marketing, Social Media Management, Organic Inbound Marketing, Lead Generation, Outbound Marketing, Paid Advertising, Press & Media Relations, etc.
Q2) How did the idea for your business/startup come about?
Two years back I was working as a PR & Content Head in a co. But my inner self knew I was made for doing something of my own. One day I came across the profile of a motivational speaker – Mel Robbins (if you don’t know her, GOOGLE). I was inspired. I understood what I REALLY wanted to do, I wanted to be a digital coach so that I can add value to lives and help people achieve their goals. I quit my job (yes, just like that), enrolled in online courses, and became a certified coach. I was ready to serve the world. (By providing online webinars, courses, and workshops). But there came the real downfall.
NO ONE PURCHASED MY COURSES & WEBINARS.
NOT A SINGLE SOUL.
Yes, I was disappointed but I realized why this happened.
I didn’t have an online presence. Why would anyone buy my courses if they don’t know me? I understood why personal branding is so important. More the people know about you, the more opportunities come to you.
Q3) What was your key driving force to become an entrepreneur?
I never had a problem doing a job but I always wanted to do something of my own. I knew I had the potential and the rest I have mentioned before how I became an entrepreneur.
Q4) How did you come up with the name of your business/startup?
I wanted to empower people through my work.
An empowering name, to make people have confidence in themselves. So Kavita Empower Ventures. But I do have plans of coming up with something new for the same soon.
Q5) What services do you provide?
I along with my team at Kavita Empower Ventures provide our clients with Online Personal Branding, LinkedIn Personal Branding, LinkedIn Growth Hacking, Copywriting, Content Creation, Content Marketing, Social Media Marketing, Social Media Management, Organic Inbound Marketing, Lead Generation, Outbound Marketing, Paid Advertising, Press & Media Relations, etc.
Q6) Why should people choose your services?
I think people should choose Kavita Empower Ventures over others because of our honesty and transparency with work. We deliver the promised work timely. Moreover, why boast about us on my own? We have great reviews from our past clients. The outcome is truly value for money.
Most importantly, I can stress on the fact that we have years of experience. So you need not be concerned if you are working with us, that’s our part.
Q7) How do you market your business, and which tactics have been most successful?
I think the best way to market a business and at least in my case which has proved most successful is Organic marketing. Organic growth and getting the word out both online and offline helps a lot! Go for inbound marketing and not outbound. You work on yourself to get better each day. Create value for your environment, and that too with consistency. The leads will come and you convert them. That’s how it worked for me.
Q8) What risks are you facing?
I personally don’t think there are any risks I face in my business. But one thing that definitely bothers me sometimes is how I prioritize work over health. My negligence towards my health is definitely a risk… something I look forward to working on in this new year.
Q9) Did pandemic (COVID19) affect your business? If yes how?
If you assume the term ‘affected’ negatively then no the pandemic did not affect my business. In fact, it was quite the opposite for me. My business grew during Covid as businesses and individuals switched to online mode.
Q10) Have you considered any alliance/partnership/funding?
I am not looking for partnerships or alliances at the moment. I think I can self-sustain my venture along with my team. The same goes for the funding part.
Q11) What are your responsibilities as a business owner?
Being an entrepreneur, your startup is your child. You need to look after everything yourself even if you hire nannies for it! Even though I have a very efficient team, I personally supervise each of them and look after everything from A to Z. There’s a ton of things I do by myself- Researching, Writing, Editing, Reviewing, Scheduling, Posting, etc.
Q12) How many hours a day do you work on average & can you describe/outline your typical day?
I generally work for 8-10 hours a day. My day starts when I wake up at 8 in the morning. I sip on Fennel seeds/cumin seeds water immediately after waking up. You must too, it’s highly beneficial for your health. Post that I do some household chores. Then I sit to interact with my little nephews. A stressbuster I must say! After I bathe and pray I have my first meal of the day. I begin working around 10 am and work for around 4-5 hours whilst taking breaks in between to let the creative juices keep flowing.
I start by reviewing work from the previous day done by my team, check my to-do list, post if there’s anything scheduled, etc. By 3 I’m done with lunch and back at work. I try to wrap up by 8:30. Some household work after that followed by dinner with my family. Late at night I’m usually just scrolling through Instagram as that’s my go-to for research or watching motivational videos. I hit the hay at 12 max.
Q13) What is your greatest fear and how do you manage it?
My biggest fear would be losing my family members or just anyone I care about & love. I try hard to push these thoughts away when they cross my mind. To do so I also surround myself with spirituality. Professionally, I don’t have any fear as such.
Q14) What comes first for you, money or emotions?
I would any day choose emotions over money. Let me explain my perspective through an example-
I am on the lookout for boys for marriage. Now given a choice between marrying someone for money or marrying someone with whom I can actually be emotionally attached, I’d go for the latter any day!
Emotions over money, but money follows because I definitely value it too but not more than emotions both in the personal and professional setup.
Q15) Tell us about your early life and how has being an entrepreneur affected your family life?
I started off my professional life working corporate jobs and even freelancing. But I was not happy. I needed satisfaction, which didn’t come to me when I was working for someone else. Now as an entrepreneur, I surely work more hours but at least I feel happy with my work.
There is a downside though. Yes if I worked a job I would get to spend more time with my family. An entrepreneur always needs to be on his/her toes.
Q16) What piece of advice would you like to give college graduates who want to become entrepreneurs?
My only tip for college graduates who aspire to become entrepreneurs is to start building their personal brand right away. Trust me. You might not see it’s important right now, or you might be postponing it, but it’s better to start now. The more you postpone it, the more time it will take for you. So why not start it right away?
As an entrepreneur it’ll help you get recognition before you even launch your venture!
Even the investors will see your presence and be impressed.
Or, should I say you wouldn’t need to go for leads, they will come to your way on their own.
